French

"Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things." (Flora Lewis)

Intent

Our MFL curriculum has been designed to ensure each and every child in KS2 receives a stimulating and interesting French program of study.  Our aspirational curriculum intends to develop language skills through fun and engaging activities and enrich the children’s cultural capital though wider experiences of language appreciation.  Not only do we explore culture capital through our program of study, as a whole-school we celebrate cultural capital with French Day which consolidates learning for KS2 and introduce EYFS and KS1 to a MFL. Our intention is that all children leave our school with a love of learning a foreign language with aspirations of taking this further in KS3.

Implementation

Our MFL curriculum plan has been designed to ensure a sequence of skills, knowledge and understanding in French is acquired through a spiral program.   Other opportunities are provided to engage the children in using MFL and promote a foreign language (eg taking the register in another language, singing French songs).   Staff are supported by a French subject leader to deliver high quality and engaging lessons which begin with the recapping of previous learning before progressing onto new learning.  French speaking and listening activities with the introduction of new vocabulary are prioritised and embedded within lessons.  Inclusion is a key priority and the presentation of all information make learning accessible for all.  End of unit assessments along with AFL within lessons are strong and informs future planning.

Impact

There is a genuine love of French throughout the school.   We know our languages curriculum is impactful when our children make good progress and are engaged, demonstrating enjoyment and enthusiasm. Our curriculum will ensure all pupils develop key language learning skills set out by the National Curriculum, as well as a love of languages and learning about other cultures. Through our Catholic values embedded within our aspirational curriculum, our children learn about diversity and appreciation of others – teaching the children another language so they can communicate with others and learning about the cultures and customs of others are integral to this aim.

When children leave our school, we aim to equip them with the desire to succeed further in French.
